Intro to Building Inspections

This introductory course provides a practical overview of the building inspection profession for those who are new to the role or considering the transition into performing building inspections.

Attendees will learn the purpose of inspections, the responsibilities of the inspector, and how inspections support safe construction and code compliance.

The course will introduce common inspection types, basic inspection workflow, communication in the field, documentation, and the importance of consistency and professionalism. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of what building inspectors do, how the role differs from code enforcement, and what to expect when entering the profession. This course is provided by the International Code Council (ICC)

Intro to Plan Reviews

This introductory course explains the basic purpose and process of plan review in the building profession. Attendees will be introduced to how construction documents are used, what information is typically reviewed, and how plan review helps identify code issues before construction begins.

The session will cover common terminology, the relationship between plan review, permits, and inspections, and the importance of accuracy and attention to detail. Designed for beginners, this course helps participants understand how plan review supports safe, compliant projects and gives them a foundation for understanding the reviewer’s role in the overall development process. Residential Building Inspections – Life Safety

This introductory course focuses on the basic life safety elements commonly reviewed during residential building inspections. Attendees will be introduced to key topics such as means of egress, stairways, guards, handrails, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and emergency escape and rescue openings. The session will explain why these requirements matter, how they protect occupants, and what inspectors look for in the field.

Residential Building Inspections – Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas

This introductory course provides a basic overview of residential plumbing, mechanical, and fuel gas inspections.

Attendees will learn the purpose of these inspections, the role of the inspector, and the essential components commonly reviewed in the field. Topics include basic system safety, approved materials, venting, clearances, piping, connections, and the importance of proper installation. Fire Inspection - Part 1

This introductory course provides a foundational overview of fire inspection principles for those who are new to the profession or expanding their knowledge of life safety and code enforcement.

Attendees will be introduced to the role of the fire inspector, the purpose of fire inspections, and the basic codes and standards used to evaluate buildings and sites for fire and life safety compliance. The session will cover common inspection practices, hazard recognition, documentation, communication in the field, and the importance of consistent enforcement.

Fire Inspection - Part 2

Techniques of De-escalation This introductory follow-up course builds on the basic concepts presented in Part 1 and continues the discussion of fire inspection practices and responsibilities. Attendees will further explore common fire and life safety issues found during inspections, including means of egress, occupancy considerations, fire protection systems, hazardous conditions, and maintenance-related concerns.

Existing Building Code Basics

This introductory course provides a basic overview of the existing building code and its role in regulating repairs, alterations, additions, and changes of occupancy in existing structures.

Understanding Temporary Structures, ADUs & Tiny Homes

This introductory course provides a practical overview of three increasingly common topics in today’s built environment: temporary structures, accessory dwelling units, and tiny homes.

Attendees will be introduced to the basic purpose, common characteristics, and code considerations associated with each type of structure. The session will discuss how these uses differ from traditional construction, the common challenges they present for enforcement and inspection staff, and the importance of understanding applicable code requirements, safety concerns, and occupancy issues.

Commercial Building Inspections – Part 1
